Danenberg Design-Unique Sensibilities–Interviewed by Krista Payne
How did you get into the Design Business?
Dan: With Dan’s architectural degree in hand, we moved to Hawaii, where his original kitchen design showroom was the first to bring the Poggenpohl line of German cabinetry to the Hawaiian Islands. We owned two separate businesses while living in Hawaii. Upon moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, we combined our skills and mutual love of architecture and design to form Danenberg Design, specializing in one-of-a-kind kitchen / bath designs and complete home remodels.
How long have you been in the renovation and design business?
Lanny: 29 years!
Where are you located?
Dan: Danenberg Design is located in Palo Alto, CA where we have been doing business for the past 13 years. In addition to many projects in Hawaii and the Bay Area, we have done projects in NY and other states and are currently working on home renovation projects in Kauai and Palo Alto.
Who are your clients?
Lanny: Danenberg Design works mainly with residential clients. We have had the opportunity to work on several multi-unit high-rise projects in San Francisco and Hawaii. In addition, we would welcome the opportunity to do small scale retail boutique and furniture design.
In general where do you get your design ideas and inspirations?
Dan: We are passionate about what we do. We strive to keep abreast of what is going on in our industry and it is not unusual, given our constant involvement with design and unusual materials, for some of our most creative ideas to present themselves to us at night while asleep!
What are the big trends that you are seeing in the interior design industry right now?
Lanny: We are seeing more modern / contemporary designs and clean lines than we have seen in the past. Rather than follow industry trends, our firm focuses on timeless designs that will stand the test of time and will be appreciated for years to come. We also have obtained our CGBP (Certified Green Building Professional) designation, in order to assist clients who desire for their projects to be ‘green’.
What is the most interesting request that you have had from a client?
Lanny: One of our recent clients (whose favorite color is orange) selected a bright orange Turbochef oven as the starting point to her design project. The oven became a feature in a brightly colored kitchen that includes high-gloss cherry cabinets, stainless steel tiles on the back splash and a custom 2-1/4″ thick ‘crushed’ glass raised counter top at the island. This exciting project was featured in the March/April issue of K BB magazine.
Describe the product that you purchased from Diamond Spas?
Dan: We purchased an elliptical stainless steel Japanese bath for our client’s master bath. It worked beautifully with the Asian theme that we were aiming for. We had never heard of Diamond Spas before our purchase, but after viewing their work online, we loved the custom aspect of it and the idea of a tub made out of stainless steel. The tub fit the space perfectly. A stylized bamboo reed shade trellis in stainless steel is suspended from the ceiling above. We were thrilled with the overall results, which offer the client the serenity of her own spa retreat.
